Dave Heath
Co-published by LE BAL and Steidl for this exhibition, Dialogues With Solitudes brings together iconic images as well as numerous unpublished works by photographer Dave Heath. Accompanying the photos are a text by Francesco Zanot, situating Heath’s work in the history of American photography, and an interview of Heath conducted by Michael Torosian (Lumière Press) in 1988, translated into French for the first time.
“HE WITNESSED THE SAME FURY EVERYWHERE, WHILE HIS PHOTOGRAPHS ACCOMPANIED THE UNFOLDING OF EPOCHAL EVENTS: THE WAR IN KOREA, THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, PACIFISM, FEMINISM, AND THE BEAT GENERATION; THEY ALL FLOW THROUGH THE BACKGROUND OF THE IMAGES, WHILE THE INDIVIDUALS IN THE FOREGROUND FIGHT AND STRUGGLE TO BEAR THEIR OWN DAILY LIVES AND DEAL WITH THEIR FEARS. THE SMALL PRIVATE STORIES AND THE LARGE-SCALE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ARE SUPERIMPOSED UPON ONE ANOTHER WITH A SENSE OF INEVITABILITY THAT WITHDRAWS ANY RULES AND HIERARCHIES.” — Francesco Zanot
