Mark Lewis
Mark Lewis – Above and Below is the first catalog published entirely by Le BAL, to coincide with the exhibition of the same name.
In the five years of it’s existence LE BAL has co-published some books which became well-known as objects, Ponte City, Criminal Investigation, Dark Knees, Anticorps or Les Livres de Photographie d’Amérique Latine. Working with reknown publishers such as Xavier Barral, Patrick Le Bescont, André Frère, Michael Mack and Gerhard Steidl, LE BAL succeeded in conceiving and producing books that were at once catalogues for our shows and objects in themselves. This book brings the videos to life on the page, without making any sacrifices in the reproduction of the images.
Conceived by the young designer Agnès Dahan, and edited by Diane Dufour and Chantal Pontbriand, this book gives access to Mark Lewis’ work in a visual way by showing ten films via screenshots in their entirety. The double pages enlight the grammar of the video work, bringing out Mark Lewis observations of the gestures and movements of people in everyday situations – everything is slowed down, everything is enhanced and intensified. With texts in English and French by the artist and Chantal Pontbriand, this book, printed in color by EBS in Italy with a stamped in title, transcends the codes of catalogues documenting video work.
The book includes the series The Pitch (1998), Cigarette Smoker at the Cafe Grazynka Warsaw (2010), Above and Below the Minhocão (2014), Forte! (2010), Observation in Cheorwon County (2014), The Moving Image (2011), Rush Hour, Morning and Evening, Cheapside (2005), Cold Morning (2009), City Road 04 May 2012 (2012), Windy Day (2012).
