THE FALL SEMINAR OF LE BAL AT EHESS AIMS TO EXPLORE THE CHALLENGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY IMAGE AND TO GRASP THE NOTION OF VISUAL "DOCUMENT" IN ALL ITS DIVERSITY. EACH TOPIC GIVES RISE TO THEORETICAL CONTRIBUTIONS, PRESENTATIONS AND ANALYSES OF WORKS BY RENOWNED ARTISTS, PHILOSOPHERS, HISTORIANS AND ANTHROPOLOGISTS BASED ON EXAMPLES CHOSEN FROM THE FIELDS OF PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO AND CINEMA. FOR ITS TENTH EDITION, THE FALL SEMINAR OF LE BAL AT EHESS ADDRESSES THE ISSUE OF THE TIMES OF THE IMAGE.

Jean-Marie Schaeffer, moderator of the seminar, is director of studies at EHESS, director of research at the CNRS and a specialist in philosophical aesthetics and art theory. He recently published Art, création, fiction [Art, creation, fiction] (with Nathalie Heinich, Éditions Jacqueline Chambon, 2004), Adieu à l'esthétique [Farewell to aesthetics] (Presses universitaires de France, 2000), and Pourquoi la fiction ? [Why fiction?] (Éditions du Seuil, 1999).

With Nathalie Boulouch, historian of contemporary art and photography, teacher-researcher at the Université Rennes 2 - Stéphane Breton, anthropologist and filmmaker - Marie de Brugerolle, historian, art critic and curator - Therese Collins, professor of cognitive sciences at the Université Paris-Descartes - Pablo Silveira Fontoura, PhD student at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales - Adrien Genoudet, attached to Patrick Boucheron's chair at the Collège de France, PhD student at the Université Paris 8 - Arno Gisinger, photographic artist and teacher-researcher at the Université Paris 8 - Michel Menu, researcher at the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France - Marylène Negro, artist & Olivier Schefer, professor of Aesthetics at the Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne - Can Onaner, architect, doctor in history of architecture, teaching at the school of architecture of the city & territories in Marne-la-Vallée - Estefania Peñafiel Loaiza, artist - Marie Pierre-Bouthier, teacher at the École normale supérieure de Paris, PhD student in cinema at the Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne - Jeff Daniel Silva, director, member of the Norbert Elias Centre at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales.
