Antoine d’Agata - Magnum photos / Courtesy Galerie Les filles du calvaire

The couple formed by the photographer and the prostitute is as old as Herod.

This couple has nothing self-evident: the girl is public, the public eye, but their relationship is accepted only if the photographer is standing at a distance, he has the good taste to preserve . For this couple stumbles on a third figure, although less acceptable: the client. This ménage à trois (the photographer - the girl - the client) embarrasses, you do not want to see, you do not want to photograph. Yet it is central, and eventually inevitable. Photography Antoine d'Agata has stared, has endorsed, to take him elsewhere: right in the aberration of the world.

Philippe Azoury is a journalist and film critic.
