Chowra Makaremi is an anthropologist and researcher at the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) in Paris.
Her research focuses on judicial and ordinary forms of state violence and the experiences of those that experience it, particularly those in exile. Makaremi explores it through different approaches, including narrative stories and documentary cinema. Her book Le Cahier d’Aziz (Gallimard, 2011), inspired from her grand father Aziz Zarei memoirs, reconnects with a minority history of Iranian revolution through its episodes of collective repression and massacre. Her work is linked to the invisibility measures implemented by the powers and the different types of resistance with which society responds.
