Ville de Calais

Meeting with Henk Wildschut
Thursday October 12, 2017 - 8 PM

Henk Wildschut

Before the Calais "jungle" has totally disappeared from the media coverage, how can we mobilize the public and politic opinion about this humanitarian disaster in the heart of Europe ? Before this inextricable situation, the dutch photographer Henk Wildschut highlights the pressure forces emerging from the community  in his book Ville de Calais.

For 10 years, Wildschut followed the everyday life of refugees from Africa or Middle East in several camps, among which he found : the Calais "jungle". Awarded by the author prize at the Rencontres d'Arles 2017, Ville de Calais documents the daily life of refugees and the transformation of the dispersed camps forming a clandestine city with its restaurants, bakeries, mosques and shops. After the destruction of the camp in 2016 in the context of the rising of rar-right, new camps are built in even more precarious conditions. The photographer will discuss at LE BAL about his work, its issues and the conceivables common solutions

The discussion - in english - will be followed by a book signing at the bookshop.
