Faceless, 2017

Manu Luksch

Following the cycle “Machine seeing: images, power, algorithms” that took place in 2018-2019, this new meeting schedule invests the field of automated seeing and listening technologies as well as their social and political uses.

These technologies are at the origin of very diverse devices such as the smart city (the so-called “intelligent” city, in other words, administered by algorithms) or the deep fake (thistechnique of hyper-destruction bysuperimposing audiovisual content on other videos)produce concrete effects on the conduct of our lives and open up horizons that end up being more often dystopian than emancipatory. Above all, they encourage us to investigate, at a new expense, belief systems in image and voice.

Each meeting revolves around projections and interventions by artists, photographers and filmmakers, as well as art, cinema, media and visual and sound culture theorists.

Thursday, January 23rd at 8pm: Thinking Machines

With Anthony Masure, research director at the Art and Design Institute of the Haute école d’art et de design – HEAD, Geneva, and Alexia Mathieu, director of the Master degree Media Design at the HEAD, Geneva.

Thursday, February 6th at 8pm: From artificial soul to artificial intelligence / Machine seeing and sovereignty

With Zachary Formwalt, video artist and Joshua Simon, art curator, film director and writer.

Thursday, February 27th at 8pm

With Jussi Parikka, media theorist, currently teaching at the Winchester School of Art at the University of Southampton.

Thursday, June 4th at 8pm

With Nicolas Obin, lecturer at the science faculty of the Sorbonne Université, researcher in the Sound Analysis and Synthesis team of the Ircam and Juliette Volcler, independent researcher and redaction coordinator of Syntone, a review dedicated to sound.
