Mishka Henner

Can documentary photography’s potential be re-imagined in the age of digital media and computer-generated images? How can photographers use the Internet and geospatial data to depict invisible structures of power and oppression? As part of Surveillance Index at BAL from January 10 to 27, Belgian photographer Mishka Henner leads a one-day workshop about perspectives of the image on networks.

Since 2010, Mr. Henner has probed the protocols of documentary photography’s new uses on the Internet and geospatial data in projects and books such as Dutch landscapes, No Man's Land and Fifty-One Military Outposts. Drawing upon case studies, he will introduce participants to the use of various Internet tools and methods as research sources in their photography or writing projects and their application to the book medium. They will also learn how to connect different sets of data with Google Earth, Panoramio, GIS, Flickr and Google Street View.

For whom is the workshop intended?

The workshop is meant for photographers and artists with a writing/photography project or an interest in using digital media and tools in their work. At the end, each participant will present his or her work and discuss the construction of his or her project personally with Mishka Henner. Enrolment is limited to 10 participants. The workshop will take place in English and French. To find out more and register, please send an e-mail including a dossier/PDF with 8 to 10 pictures of your work to lauriola@le-bal.fr.
