PROVOKE & THE HISTORY OF JAPANESE PHOTO MAGAZINES

Conference & Book launch
Saturday November 10, 2018 - 7:30 PM

Provoke

Briefly published from 1968 to 1969, PROVOKE has profoundly changed the landscape of contemporary photography. In 2016, LE BAL dedicated a major exhibition to the magazine and showed on this occasion the original, highly sought after issues. The Japanese publisher Nitesha reissues today a facsimile of the three magazines whose launch will be done at LE BAL during a special event with a conference on the history of Japanese photo magazines hosted by Ivan Vartanian from Goliga. (SOLD OUT)The presentation will be followed by the launch at the bookstore and an evening at the café. Books, Japanese psychedelic music and sake on the program!

Largely ignored at the time, the PROVOKE magazine has acquired today a cult status and influenced many photographers and artists. Founded by a collective of photographer Takuma Nakahira and critic Koji Taki, joined by Takahiko Okada, Yutaka Takanashi and later Daido Moriyama, the magazine has polarized the best of Japanese photographic creation of the 1960s, emphasizing in its practice the printed image in all its forms (press, books, magazine) and mixing in each issue images, writing and poetry. It has now become a rare and difficult to find magazine. Re-edited by Nitesha with the translation of the original texts in English, including those of Takahiko Okada, the facsimile will be launched at LE BAL during an evening solely dedicated to Japanese photo magazines. On this occasion, Ivan Vartanian, publisher of Goliga, will present his new upcoming book The History of Japanese Photo Magazines (1880s to 1980s) and a selection of several of these publications of the 60s and 70s will be discussed. He will be accompanied by Amanda Ling-Ning Lo, co-publisher of Nitesha editions, Tomo Kosuga, director of the estate of photographer Masahisa Fukase as well as Ryuichi Kaneko and Masako Toda, both photography historians and photobook specialists. More details will be announced soon.

The book is already for pre-order on the site of the bookstore.
Available at LE BAL from November 10th. Shipping from November 14th.
